Poor Farm To Reopen As Family Fun Park Down County officials confirmed persistent rumors today that the long-dormant Down County Poor Farm will reopen it’s gates this summer. The thirty-six acre site, which operated from 1928 until the early ‘60’s when it became an infamous focal point for Flubug’s counter-culture, will be reborn as a living museum and fun park, and promises more than a passing memory for those housed within its sub-standard walls. Commissioner Vance Thornton, who will preside over the reconstruction, promises to accurately restore the quaint “chicken coop” architectural style and vintage accountrements, including the original shackles and straw bedding. Visitors will get to try their hand at old-fashioned Poor Farm “chores” such as coin prospecting, composting, wall scrawling and weeping, and a master class is planned in spoon sharpening and weapons construction. That class, to be led by Titus “T.T.” Turnbull, who was housed at the facility at the end of World War II following a freak accident that claimed his thumbs, is sure to fill up fast. There will be plenty of fun for families as well. Planned activities include a “Snake Pit,”
